When Roessleville High School closed in favor of the newly constructed Colonie Central High School in the fall of 1953, a new era was born. The spring of 1954 saw the birth of the Colonie Raiders baseball program and marked the beginning of an unparalleled, local athletic tradition.
Beginning in 1969, legendary coach Len Muhlich began a stretch of 26 consecutive seasons as Colonie's Varsity coach. During this remarkable run, the Raiders were crowned Section II Champions three times and finished atop the Suburban Council four times. In all, Muhlich finished two victories shy of 300 career wins before turning the program over to Greg Lanni following the 1994 season.
From 1994-2008, Lanni's Raiders won 197 games, qualifying for Section II postseason play in 11 of his 14 seasons at the helm. In 2006, he guided Colonie to a school record 22 wins and an appearance in the NYSPHSAA State Finals in Binghamton.
In 2009, longtime Colonie coach and native son Kevin Halburian was named Colonie's newest Varsity coach. In his thirteen seasons, Halburian's teams won 151 games for a winning percentage of .589, including nine trips to the Section II playoffs. Most memorable was the 2011 campaign, when the Raiders won 18 games and fell to cross-town rival Shaker in the Sectional Finals. Coach Halburian was named Suburban Council Coach of the Year twice in 2009 and 2011.
On August 30th, 2021, Michael Morrissey was named the next Head Coach at Colonie High School.
Coach Morrissey is only the fifth head coach in the history of the program. In his first season, he led the Raiders to capture their first Suburban Council Championship since 2011.
The program has been founded on baseball fundamentals and personal character. The Varsity team is the pinnacle of a rich, youth baseball experience for Colonie's best players. On and off the field, the Raiders staff have created a Code of Conduct which helps shape players into responsible, determined and proud graduates. The coaching staff has also developed a strong relationship with the local network of youth coaches at the Little League, Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth levels. Additionally, the program holds an annual Military Appreciation game, Cancer Awareness game, as well as Senior Night to recognize the graduating senior players.
